The Problem with Default LaTeX Typography
Default LaTeX outputs Computer Modern, a Victorian Didone typeface designed for 19th-century mathematics. While precise for formulas, Didone typefaces have extreme vertical stroke contrast and razor-thin hairlines that dazzle the eye and cause severe reading fatigue over 300 pages of text.
The Renaissance Master: Monotype Bembo
In 1495, the Venetian punchcutter Francesco Griffo cut a typeface for the printer Aldus Manutius to publish the essay De Aetna by Cardinal Pietro Bembo.
In 1929, Stanley Morison supervised the digitization of this typeface for the Monotype Corporation under the name Bembo.
Why Bembo Is the King of Prose:
- Low Contrast Ratio: The difference between thick and thin strokes is subtle, creating an even, warm grey tone on the page.
- Short Descenders & Ascenders: Allows compact leading (
14pton10.5pttext) without colliding. - Proportional OldStyle Figures: Numbers (
1, 2, 3, 4, 5...) have varied heights and descenders that flow seamlessly within body sentences like lowercase letters.
The Modern Foil: Adrian Frutiger’s Avenir
To prevent a book from looking like an antique Renaissance manuscript, modern book designers pair Bembo with Avenir Next (designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1988).
Avenir is a geometric sans-serif informed by human anatomy—its circles are not rigid mathematical compass curves (like Futura), but optically corrected ovals that feel warm, approachable, and punchy.
The Layout Rules
- Chapter Opening: Interlocking 52pt soft-grey Avenir numeral with tracked uppercase
CHAPTERoverlay. - Subheads: $32\text{ mm}$ structural rule ($0.75\text{ pt}$ thickness) above bold uppercase tracked Avenir.
- Drop Caps: 3-line Roman serif
fbbcapital in soft grey (#8E9195). - Footers: Minimal bottom pagination separated by a hairline pipe (
CHAPTER TITLE | 127).
